Maya Hewitt

Maya Hewitt's works are a painted world of interlinking, multi-threaded and often ambiguous narratives that convey both childlike innocence and adult understanding. The construction of these unreal spaces is drawn from points of spectral encounter, where notions of power and desire contend.

Her all-encompassing installations and individual oil paintings on birch wood panels impose fragmented scenarios, which are linked with a unifying sense of unease. The figures appear and recur through shifting cycles as perpetual incarnations of themselves.

Set within a framework of interior spaces such as public buildings, shops and diners, the works explore the artist's acutely introspective and immersive world. Seemingly lost in reflective loneliness, the figures exhibit a sense of detachment, yet they appear to be inextricably bound to one another. These spectral figures act as surrogates for the artist's undulating states of mind, the sense of reverie and longing filling the work with romance and melancholy.
