Ali Silverstein

Ali Silverstein uses grids to break down her source images into a series of cells - each cell a microcosm of abstract shapes of colour. She then records each of these shapes, building them up as layers of light, bricks of colour, to create a new image. In this process each mark takes precedence over the overall representation, so that a shape of white, for example, has its own integrity, liberated from the idea of "snow". The process of layering these abstractions into traditional representations creates for the viewer a sumptuous and resonant visual experience - creating a dynamic integration of abstraction and representation.
