Michael Ajerman - Long Way Round

8 Sep - 8 Oct 2005

BISCHOFF/WEISS is pleased to announce the opening of 'Long Way Round', the first solo show of American artist Michael Ajerman.

Michael Ajerman creates rich colour paintings that point to an intense dramatic environment. His atmospheric works have a complex personal importance; they reveal a drive to make sense of something sensed or experienced. "It's images of people, places, and situations because that's what is important to me. It always has been. There is definitely something internally provoking me to do it. Visual depiction is how I go about this exploration. I'm attracted to it."

Ajerman follows an image as it unfolds and builds, which sometimes leads to a metamorphosis of the piece as a whole. These developments, and whatever analysis underpins them, are firmly based on the tenets and complexities of two-dimensional picture-making. Of the wider notions and themes in his paintings, he says "I do feel as I keep painting that humour and horror are pretty close. I am definitely interested in the variation of mood that you can put into one piece. It's important to me to have and undercurrent in the image: it makes the stakes higher, and increases the personal and pictorial demands."

Born in New York in 1977, Ajerman studied at the Corcoran and at the New York Studio School. He then moved to London, where he now lives, to do his master's at the Slade graduating in 2003. The following year, he was short listed for the DLA Art Award and was part of ARTfutures exhibition organized by the Contemporary Art Solciety (London). His work has been shown in various exhibitions and fairs in New York and London. His show 'Long Way Round' at the BISCHOFF/WEISS is the first solo show.
