LE (9) BIS is a not-for-profit exhibition space devoted to promoting contemporary art for the benefit of the public. The core activity of LE (9) BIS is an outstanding exhibition programme which shows innovative and thought-provoking work by international contemporary artists. The space mounts six to eight exhibitions a year in a variety of media: sculpture, painting, installation, video and photography, drawing.
LE (9) BIS was started in 1998 by artists Assan Smati and Damien Deroubaix in a spirit of community, hoping to assist and encourage innovation, experimentation and potential in the arts. This a privately funded space supported by the City Council of Saint-Etienne, the Region Rhône-Alpes and the Ministry of Culture, with the possibility of additional future funding coming from the public and private sectors. It attracts a wide audience of art professionals, artists, writers, critics, curators, collectors, lecturers, teachers, students, and the general public. Group and class visits can be arranged by appointment.
